Confirmation II Paperwork: The Role of the Sponsor

The Role of the Sponsor

Sponsors: All candidates are required to select someone who models an active, living Catholic faith to walk with them through this life journey of faith.

Candidates are asked to…
• Reflect on what you are really looking for in a sponsor?

o Your sponsor should be a person you consider a mature and dedicated member of the Church.
o He or she should be a person who can truly help you in many ways. The sponsor should be able to help you understand the teaching of Jesus and help you live out that teaching.
o A sponsor should be able to guide you and help you become familiar with your parish’s activities.
o A sponsor should not be afraid to point out bad habits and help you work at overcoming them. Therefore, the choice of a sponsor should be taken seriously. You should seek a person who not only can help you become a better Catholic, but also has the time to help you prepare for Confirmation.

• All sponsors have the responsibility to:
o Share examples of full, active participation in parish life.
o Be a good role model in a personal commitment to the Lord and the Church.
o Talk about and encourage participation in and encourage parish life.
o Discuss the Catholic faith.
o Share forms of prayer.
o Meet at least once with the candidate and keep in touch about class sessions and content, service projects, retreat and answer any questions that may come up during the process.

• Confirmation Sponsors must:
o First, be Baptized, be Confirmed, and have received the Eucharist in the Catholic faith. And if married, married in the Catholic Faith. And if single, not co-habitating.
They must show proof of these Sacraments by turning in their Sacramental certificates.
o Second, your sponsor has to be at least eighteen years old.
o Third, your sponsor needs to be a person of faith, that is, a practicing Catholic. Sponsor should be active in their faith and Christian life. Active participation means that the sponsor regularly
attends Mass and is involved in the life of their parish and – most importantly – their faith formation.
They must have their Pastor/Pastoral Coordinator sign off on their involvement at their parish.
o A Sponsor is preferably someone outside the immediate family.

Parents cannot serve as Confirmation sponsors per Canon Law.

Pure Love Retreat

St. Patrick Young Apostle Leadership Team Presents:
“Made to be Pure” High School Retreat
Saturday February 12, 2011
8:00am to 4:00pm
Cost $35 before February 6th, after $40

In today's world, it's all too easy for a young woman to fool herself with lies about love. Every woman longs for love, but many have given up. In the Pure Womanhood sessions of this day retreat, a young woman’s hope will be restored and we’ll show that pure love is possible regardless of the past.

Teenage guys are often told to be gentlemen, and to treat women like ladies. However, they are rarely given concrete steps on how to do this. During this day retreat, Guys will learn about Pure Manhood, as we challenge young men to look to Christ as the model of masculinity and purity.

This retreat is open to all and any high school teens! The retreat is filled with skits, talks, small groups and the sacrament of Reconciliation, all reflecting purity and chastity in our daily lives!
